NDS Surgical Imaging Expands Product Operations and Appoints John Murphy as New President and CEO

Former President, CEO and Founder Carmen Piucci to take on Business Development Role

San Jose, CA –NDS Surgical Imaging (NDSsi), a leading provider of digital technologies for modern surgical suites, announced that 2007 proved to be a very strong year for growth. Led by product portfolio expansion, the last year demonstrated NDSsi’s commitment to technology excellence and its ability to deliver state of the art performance to the global surgical market. In order to meet such growth and demand, NDSsi also announced key personnel moves, including the appointment of John Murphy as President and CEO, further accelerating the company’s momentum in the market and continued industry leadership.   

Growth for NDSsi in 2007 and into 2008 includes European operation expansion and the establishment of a wholly owned subsidiary in Tokyo, Japan to serve Asia-Pacific customers.  In addition, NDSsi has continued to innovate new products in the last year, while also embarking on a lean manufacturing journey to established world-class operations via a Lean/Six Sigma initiative at the Company’s new facility and headquarters in San Jose, CA.  NDSsi was also a recipient of Frost & Sullivan’s prestigious 2007 Technology Excellence Award, given for technology innovation and the ability to understand market needs and actively pursue fulfillment by developing new technologies. NDSsi has also been recognized with the 2008 North American Brand Development Strategy Leadership of the Year Award for outstanding brand-building efforts in the medical imaging market from Frost & Sullivan.

John Murphy has served in his new appointment as President and CEO at NDSsi since the beginning of the year.  Mr. Murphy has an extensive background in executive management including the role of President and CEO at Celerity, Inc., a TPG portfolio company, Corporate EVP and COO at PerkinElmer, Inc., a role focusing on the PerkinElmer Life and Analytical Sciences strategic business unit, as well as several years as President of PerkinElmer Optoelectronics, and Vice President and General Management roles at Honeywell International (previously AlliedSignal, Inc. prior to the purchase of Honeywell by AlliedSignal).  Mr. Murphy holds a BS with Honors in Computer Science from the University of Greenwich in London, an MS in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the University of Illinois at Chicago, and an MBA in International Finance from Arizona State University.  A London native, John has lived in the United States for nearly 20 years, during which time he also lived in Tokyo for three years.

As a part of a continued effort, former President and Chief Executive Officer Carmen Piucci becomes Founder and Chairman Emeritus, moving into a Business Development role.  In this new role, he will identify, develop, strengthen and grow key customer and partner relationships with NDSsi.  He will continue to be based in San Jose.

Additional leadership changes include Dr. Jeff Zhou as Vice President of Engineering, who will oversee key development projects for NDSsi’s upcoming products. Ron Hansen, previously serving as the Company’s CTO and Vice President of Engineering, will continue his role as CTO. Jim Plewa, the Company’s Vice President of Sales, now serves as Vice President of Global Sales and Customer Care and is responsible for coordinating the Company’s global sales teams in meeting customer requirements and growing market share around the world. NDSsi’s Board of Director’s includes an experienced team of independent members and experts in their fields. The Company’s Chairman is David Belluck, General Partner at Riverside Partners LLC. Independent members include Michael M. Clair, technology investor, consultant and independent Board Member to Silicon Valley firms; Deborah Widener, independent board member with financial services expertise; and Francis Lunger, independent board member with biosciences expertise.  Additional board members include Daniel Berry and Steve Kaufman, Operating Partners at Riverside Partners LLC. Serving as NDSsi’s Corporate Counsel is Jeffrey D. Saper, Vice Chairman at Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati.
